Murray State first fielded a football team in 1924.
In 1948, the Racers were one of 6 teams to found the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). Murray State played in this conference for more than 70 years and won 8 conference championships in that period.
As of 2023, the Racers are a full member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Despite the move being announced earlier, Murray State played the 2022 season in the OVC to give the conference more time to find a replacement team.
