Modest Mouse is an American rock band from Issaquah, Washington, United States. Formed in 1992 by singer-guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy and drummer Jeremiah Green, the group became a key name in 1990s and 2000s indie rock, noted for jittery guitar work, off-kilter song structures and introspective, often darkly humorous lyrics.
Early releases on small labels led to critical acclaim with the 1997 album "The Lonesome Crowded West". Their major-label debut "The Moon & Antarctica" in 2000 further expanded their sound and reputation. Mainstream success arrived with the 2004 album "Good News for People Who Love Bad News", which produced the hit singles "Float On" and "Ocean Breathes Salty" and brought Grammy nominations. Later albums such as "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank", "Strangers to Ourselves" and "The Golden Casket" continued to blend indie rock and alternative rock with experimental touches. Despite line-up changes over the years, Modest Mouse remains an influential presence in contemporary guitar-based music.
