📜 Milton Keynes Dons History
The founding of MK Dons in 2004 is perhaps the most controversial of any club in English football. The suggestion a club might relocate to the new town was mooted for many years after it was founded in 1967, and that finally became a reality in 2001 when new Wimbledon FC chairman Charles Koppel announced the former Premier League side would have to move or go out of business.
Despite both the Football League and the Football Association opposing the relocation, an independent commission ruled in favour of it in 2002. This prompted the creation of AFC Wimbledon by disillusioned fans of the club, while the following year the original Wimbledon FC made the move. In 2004, Pete Winkelman – who had led the consortium that proposed the move in the first place – became the owner of the club, changing its name, crest, and colours to form MK Dons.
MK Dons began life in League One, surviving their first season on the final day primarily due to a 10-point deduction handed out to Wrexham, but they were relegated to League Two in their second campaign.
They have spent much of their history since in either the third or fourth tiers. In 2008, they won their first notable silverware, lifting the EFL Trophy.
