Since its inception in 2002, the Mutua Madrid Open has attracted thousands of tennis enthusiasts, all eager for a courtside seat in one of Europe's most famous cities. Initially a hard court indoor competition, the tournament changed from a hard court event to a clay court event in 2009, and moved from the Madrid Arena to the iconic Caja Mágica (Magic Box), where it remains today. This world-famous event is now part of the ATP Masters 1000 and the WTA 1000, meaning it always attracts the world’s most elite male and female players; on his favoured surface and in his home country, Rafael Nadal has won this tournament an incredible 5 times, making him the most decorated singles player at this prestigious event. The Spaniard was among those who faltered in 2012, however, when the Madrid Open employed an infamous "blue clay" surface for the tournament, which was derided by many players. The classic red surface swiftly returned in 2013, and has remained in place for every edition since.
The Madrid Open event is also often attended by celebrities, including Will Smith, Luis Figo, David Beckham, and even Queen Sofia of Spain – so keep your eyes peeled for excitement off the court as well on it!
