The Chargers were established as one of the original teams in the American Football League (AFL) before joining the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Initially based in Los Angeles, they moved to San Diego in 1961, where they remained until 2017 before returning to Los Angeles.
The Chargers have enjoyed various periods of success, reaching the playoffs multiple times, and making it to the Super Bowl in 1995, though they were .
