Lincoln City are a professional football club based in Lincoln, England. Nicknamed the Imps, they play their home games at Sincil Bank Stadium, also known as LNER Stadium for sponsorship reasons.
📜 Lincoln City History
The Imps were founded as an amateur side in 1884, taking their nickname from the legendary Lincoln Imp, a grotesque carved into a wall at the historic Lincoln Cathedral said to have been turned into stone by an angel in the 14th century.
Lincoln quickly turned professional and in 1892 they became a founding member of the Football League's Second Division. In 1921, they would also be founders of the Third Division North.
In 1987, they had the unenviable record of becoming the first team to be automatically relegated from the Football League after finishing bottom of the Fourth Division on goal difference.
The Imps spent time out of the EFL again in the modern era following their relegation in 2011. Before returning to league football in 2017, they made history as the first non-league side in over a century to reach the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.
