📜 Leeds Rhinos History
Leeds St. John's, as the club was then known, was founded in 1870, growing out of informal matches played in the Hyde Park area of Leeds. By 1890, the club had moved to the Headingley area, and had dropped "St. John's" from its team name.
In 1895, Leeds became a founder member of the Northern Rugby Football Union, following rugby's "schism" of the same year. Leeds won its first Challenge Cup in the 1909-1910 season, and it would win the competition on a further 5 occasions before World War Two.
The club's success continued into the second half of the 20th century, with another Challenge Cup win in the 1956-1957 season serving as the precursor to the side's most dominant decade to that point: Leeds won a first First Division championship in 1961, and another in 1969, with an eighth Challenge Cup coming in between the 2 top flight title wins. A third First Division followed in 1971-1972, before back-to-back Challenge Cup victories in the 1976-1977 and 1977-1978 seasons.
However, by 1996, the club was in relative disarray, with a host of player contract issues stifling any progress. The Super League era brought new promise with it, however, and the club was rebranded as Leeds Rhinos. In 1999 the Rhinos won an eleventh Challenge Cup, a trophy win which again ushered in a period of dominance - a so-called "Golden Decade". Between 2004 and 2017, Leeds Rhinos would win 8 Super League championships and 2 Challenge Cups, underpinning the team's reputation as one of the best in world rugby league. More recently, the club won its fourteenth Challenge Cup, defeating Salford Red Devils 17-16 at Wembley Stadium.
