Jill Scott, often affectionately called "Jilly from Philly", is an American singer, songwriter, poet and actress from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Originally a spoken word artist on the local poetry scene, she was discovered by Questlove of The Roots and co-wrote their Grammy-winning song "You Got Me", which led to her own recording career. Her music blends R&B, soul, neo soul, jazz, hip hop and spoken word, marked by rich storytelling and warm, expressive vocals.
In 2000 she released her debut album "Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1", followed by "Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2", "The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3", "The Light of the Sun", "Woman" and, after a decade-long gap between studio projects, "To Whom This May Concern". She has earned Grammy Awards and NAACP Image Awards, and is also known for acting work in projects such as "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" and Tyler Perry’s "Why Did I Get Married?" films. Scott founded the Blues Babe Foundation to support young people’s education.
