🏟️ Address: Piazza del Campo, Il Campo, Siena, Tuscany, 53100, Italy Directions in Google Maps
As the Piazza del Campo is in the centre of Siena, it is easy to reach by several modes of transport. Please be advised that the area gets extremely busy in the build-up to the Palio di Siena races so it is suggested you arrive in plenty of time and make your way to the square on foot.
Below you can find general information on travel and parking for Piazza del Campo. Individual events may have additional/restricted services available, and so we recommend clicking through to the event and viewing the Travel & Parking tab for event-specific information.
Parking spaces will be hard to find during the Palio di Siena events as the streets are small and used for the historical parade. Those wishing to drive to the event will need to arrive early or in the days before.
The nearest train station is Stazione Ferroviaria Siena which is a 1.8 km (22 min) walk to the Piazza del Campo. The square is easily accessible by foot.
Siena is a historic tourist destination centred within the heart of the dreamy Tuscan countryside and so, as you can imagine, accommodation is on the pricey side. In the city centre you can find grand historic apartments filled with Italian antiques as well as more basic budget-friendly rooms.
In general, there are 3 stands that sell fresh drinks and snacks and are easy to locate. You may wish to take your own water with you as the heat in the crowd during the summer can be quite intense.
You can get into the piazza from any entrance before the historical parade comes into the piazza, or after it has begun its entrance, you can go through the opening via Duprè (the entrance from the Onda contrada). Keep in mind that this last entrance; it is very narrow and walking through it can be very problematic due to the great crowds that form.
The entrance of the historical parade into the piazza is scheduled for a short time after 17:00 (or just after 16:30 for the August Palio), but since they start closing the entrances half an hour before its arrival, it is good to be inside the piazza by 16:30 in July and by 16:00 in August. This means about a 3-hour wait; considering the season, it is appropriate to be prepared for the heat which can be quite intense with such a large crowd.
Please note, there are no toilet facilities within the piazza.
Due to the Italian weather in summer and crowds that form for the races and trials, these events would be difficult for disabled spectators to attend. There are no accessible toilets and chairs are not permitted into the piazza for the events.
