The Cyclones are the football team of Iowa State University in Ames. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA and play in the Big 12 Conference.
Iowa State has won 2 conference titles in the history of the program, dating from 1911 and 1912 when the team was part of the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Since 1996, the Cyclones have been a member of the Big 12.
In 2020, Iowa State finished the regular season with an 8-1 record, the best in the Big 12. This qualified the team for the Championship game against second placed Oklahoma, but the Cyclones were defeated by the Sooners 27-21.
Since the opening of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951, 2 Cyclones have been inducted. Ed Bock, who played from 1935-1938, is known as the best offensive linesman in the history of Iowa State's football program. Troy Davis played for the Cyclones from 1994 to 1996 and is considered the best Iowa State running back ever. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist and went on to play in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints.
