The Hawkeyes are the football team of the University of Iowa in Iowa City. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA and play in the West Division of the Big Ten Conference.
Iowa claims 5 national titles, the most recent won in 1960, and 13 conference titles. The Hawkeyes' first ever conference championship was won in the Western Interstate University Football Association in 1896. All the other conference titles have been earned in the Big Ten, or its predecessor the Big Eight.
The Hawkeyes play their home games at Kinnick Stadium, which has a capacity of 69,250.
Iowa is famous for the "Kinnick Wave," a tradition that began in 2017 after a new children's hospital was opened overlooking the stadium. At the end of the first quarter of every game, all the players and fans turn to face the top floor of the hospital and wave to the children and their families inside. At night games, fans wave their lit-up phones in a visual show of support.
