This postseason bowl game has been played since 1976, and was named the Independence Bowl in honour of that year's United States Bicentennial. Since the first edition, the game has been played at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana.
The Independence Bowl has tie-ins with multiple conferences.
