Programme
Correspondence between Leibniz, Electress Sophie of Hanover and Sophie Charlotte, framed by vocal duets and scherzi by Agostino Steffani
Description
Leibniz’s gift for profound and trusting friendships found ideal partners in Electress Sophie of Hanover and her daughter, who lived in Berlin, the Prussian Queen Sophie Charlotte. He maintained an inspiring correspondence with both women. The intellectual humour, eloquence and deep affection between the correspondents make the letters a literary event. The readings are framed by vocal duets and scherzi by Agostino Steffani. Steffani was famous throughout Europe for these chamber works, and other composers such as Handel took inspiration from his compositions. The event is also the closing event of the 2026 Leibniz Festival Days, organised by the Leibniz Stiftung. An event of the City of Hanover in cooperation with the Leibniz Festival Days, presented by the Leibniz Stiftung Hannover.
