Hull Kingston Rovers is a professional rugby league club which competes in the Super League. The club is better known as Hull KR, Rovers, or by the nickname "the Robins", the latter of which came about thanks to the club's early jerseys, which had a red section on the chest, above a blue stripe. Hull KR plays home matches at Craven Park stadium.
📜 Hull KR History
Hull KR was formed in 1882 as Kingston Amateurs, and played its first competitive matches in 1883. The club played at 6 different home grounds in 12 years, the first of which was lined with stones along one touchline! By the 1890's, the club was known as Hull Kingston Rovers.
In 1895, Hull KR moved to East Hull, after city rivals Hull FC offered to pay Rovers' landlord more money, displacing Rovers in the process. Hull KR did not, however, move codes that same year, despite the "schism" rugby faced. Instead, Rovers remained a rugby union side for 2 further years, eventually joining the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1897, and becoming a top flight outfit 2 years after that.
In the 1922-1923 season, the club's first campaign at Craven Park, Hull KR won its first First Division Championship, defeating Huddersfield in the final. Rovers could not retain the title the following season, but in the 1924-1925 season a victory over Swinton secured the club's second championship in 3 seasons.
Hull KR then had to wait over 50 years for its next championship, which came in the 1978-1979 season. The club then won its first Challenge Cup the following year, defeating Hull FC in the final, 10-5, and in the 1983-1984 and 1984-1985 seasons would win back-to-back First Division titles. Another Challenge Cup final came in 1986, however the club was edged-out by Castleford, 15-14.
More recently, Hull KR has been starved of major trophies, however in 2015 the team reached its first major final since 1986, losing 50 points to 0 against holders Leeds Rhinos in the Challenge Cup final.
