Opened in September 1982 - just in time to host the 1982 European Championships in Athletics - the stadium has a capacity of 75,000 and a regulated capacity of 69,618. The venue was also used during the 2004 Summer Olympics. The stadium regularly hosts football matches including international games featuring the Greece national team.
