Ghana's first ever international was played in 1950, as Gold Coast and British Togoland; 7 years later, along with Ashanti and the Northern Territories, they would be unified into a single independent dominion under the Ghanaian name. The country's red, gold, and green flag is a symbol of that unification, and the Black Star of Africa leant its name to the team's nickname; the Black Stars. It wasn't long after their independence that they tasted glory in the Africa Cup of Nations, winning the first pair of their titles in 1963 and 1965. Although their first appearance at a FIFA World Cup did not come until 2006, they have since become regulars in the competition in the years since.
