The Austrian town of Kitzbühel first held a tennis tournament in 1904, and as the home of the present-day Austrian Open, is keeping its impressive tennis heritage alive and kicking!
The early-20th century tournament was revamped in 1945, under the title of the Alpine Country Cup, and in 1991 the tournament was part of the ATP’s first tour, its inclusion testament to the event's important history. Today, it is an ATP 250 event, and amongst its past champions are Pete Sampras, Goran Ivanišević, Juan Martín del Potro, and Dominic Thiem – who in 2019 became the first Austrian winner since 1993.
As well as being famous for its longevity and its esteemed list of previous winners, the alpine backdrop which the Generali Open still enjoys is also a huge part of the event’s appeal: the Open's scenic viewing experience is virtually unique in world tennis, and so it’s clear to see why major competitors and tennis fans alike continue to return to Kitzbühel and its high-altitude clay courts.
