First held in 1909, the French Open may be one of the oldest European badminton tournaments still to have a place on the professional circuit, but it has not always been party to the fame and fortune it now enjoys. After several cancelled editions and a lack of awareness of the tournament outside its native France, it took the restructuring of the BWF calendar in 2007 to remind badminton fans about the pedigree of the event, and in recent years the French Open has seen its stock on the badminton tour rise exponentially. Whilst French athletes are rarely favourites for badminton medals on offer anywhere in the world, the fact that this tournament has been held in Paris is indicative of the grandeur the event enjoys, and the enthusiasm for world-class badminton that can be generated anywhere!
After being hosted at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris for much of its recent history, the French Open moved to Brittany for the 2023 tournament. In 2024 the event returned to the French capital, but not to Stade Pierre de Coubertin: instead, the French Open was staged at the Porte de la Chapelle Arena, the venue selected to host the badminton and Paralympic badminton events at the 2024 Summer Olympics. In 2025, it was held at Glaz Arena in Cesson-Sévigné, before moving to Arena Grand Paris in 2026.
