Marseille is a characterful and charming port city overlooking the Mediterranean on France’s dreamy Azure Coast. Although its neighbours include Saint Tropez and Montpellier, the city is much more modest and down-to-earth due to its colourful history as a trade and fishing port. The Old Port is still a bustling place brimming with fishing boats and seafood restaurants serving fresh French delicacies. La Panier, meanwhile, located near the modern harbour, takes you back as far as 600BC when the Ancient Greeks ruled the city – although it’s filled with artsy shops and bars today. While France’s second biggest city will keep you occupied for days on end, no visit is complete without an excursion to The Calanques, a coastal national park defined by the beautiful stalagmite-like structure of its cliffs.
