Fijians had been making a name for themselves in rugby league teams overseas, long before Fiji assembled its first national side. When, in 1992, the time did come to compete on the international stage, Fiji lost its first match 32-18, to Samoa. The team has quickly improved, however, and now regularly out-ranks many of its Pacific rivals.
Fiji has competed at every Rugby League World Cup since 1995, and in 2008, 2013, and 2017 they reached the semifinal stage.
