Competitors in the County Championship, One Day Cup, and Vitality Blast, Essex County Cricket Club was founded in 1876. The club gained first-class status in 1894 before entering the County Championship in 1895.
After decades of first-class cricket, Essex secured their first County Championship in 1979. This victory heralded a golden era through the 1980s and early 1990s, with the club winning more titles, including 5 County Championships and several one-day tournaments, under the stewardship of influential captains like Keith Fletcher and Graham Gooch. Other famous England players to have starred for Essex include former England captains Nasser Hussain and Alasdair Cook.
In the T20 Blast, Essex are known as Essex Eagles. The club regularly journeys deep into the competition and won their first T20 title in 2019.
