Despite the Ecuadorian Football Federation joining FIFA in 1926 and subsequently receiving an invite to the inaugural World Cup in 1930, the national team did not make its debut until 1938 and they would have to wait until 2002 to make their first appearance at a World Cup. Along with Venezuela, Ecuador are the only South American team not to win the Copa America.
