📜 Delaware State Hornets Football History
Delaware State first fielded a football team in 1924. The team competed as an independent until 1934, when the Hornets joined the Middle Atlantic Athletic Association. This membership lasted just 2 years, before the team went independent again from 1937 to 1944.
In 1945, Delaware State joined the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association and remained part of the conference until 1970. Since 1971, the Hornets have competed in the MEAC.
Despite the fact that Delaware State and the University of Delaware both play in the FCS, with campuses less than an hour apart, the schools did not meet on the football field until 2007. Since then, the rivalry game has become a regular occurrence in the season.
