📜 Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens Football History
Delware first fielded a football team in 1889, and the university has a long history with the sport. The team's success did not begin properly until 1940, however, when new coach Bill Murray joined the program. Murray led the Blue Hens for 11 seasons, winning a Division II national championship in 1946.
Delaware has frequently competed as an independent school, although the program's first century saw brief spells in the Mason-Dixon Conference, the Middle Atlantic Conference, and the Yankee Conference.
In 1997, the Blue Hens joined the Atlantic Conference. A decade later, they moved to the CAA.
Delaware is known as a heavyweight of the FCS, with particularly strong attendance records for the team's home games.
