📜 Davidson Wildcats Football History
Davidson fielded its first football team in 1896, and the first official intercollegiate game featuring the school took place in 1898.
The team became the Wildcats in 1917, after a game against Georgia Tech saw Davidson praised for having "fought like wildcats."
From the founding of the team until 1915, Davidson competed as an independent college. After a short spell in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association between 1916 and 1921, the team went independent again until 1931. Following 4 seasons in the Big Five Conference, the Wildcats moved to the Southern Conference in 1936, and remained a member for 50 years.
In 1987, Davidson joined the Patriot League, but spent just 1 season in the conference before returning to independence. Since 2001, the Wildcats have competed in the Pioneer Football League.
