π Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Football History
Coastal Carolina fielded its first football team in 2003, following years of planning. The Chanticleers originally competed in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as members of the Big South Conference. In their second ever season, Coastal Carolina claimed a 10-1 record and 4-0 in conference games, taking the Big South title for the first time. The team would go on to win 7 total conference championships in a span of 12 years.
At the end of the 2015 season, the Chanticleers left the Big South Conference and joined the Sun Belt Conference for all sports except football. The football team played 1 season as an independent before joining the Sun Belt in 2016, becoming fully bowl eligible in 2017.
In 2020, Coastal Carolina shared the Sun Belt Championship with the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. The decisive game to choose a single winner was called off due to positive covid-19 results among the teams.
