The Chippewas are the football team of Central Michigan University (CMU) in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA and play in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
CMU claims 1 national championship from 1974, when the team competed in NCAA Division II. The Chippewas joined Division I in 1975, and became a member of the MAC in the same year. Since then, they have won 7 MAC titles and 5 division championships.
CMU play their home games at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, the largest on-campus MAC football venue by capacity. The stadium is named after donor Perry Shorts and former Chippewa coach Kenneth "Bill" Kelly, who enjoyed great success at CMU between 1951 and 1966.
