📜 Carlisle United History
The club was founded in 1904 by members of Shaddongate United, who voted at their annual general meeting to change the club's name to Carlisle United. However, some members of Shaddongate, which was founded in 1896, opposed the name change and broke away to continue using their former name.
In 1928, Carlisle joined the Football League, and almost 50 years later they reached the English top flight for the first time in their history when they gained promotion to the First Division in 1974, but it would prove to be a short-lived stay as they were relegated in their first and only season.
The Cumbrians dropped out of the Football League entirely in 2004, but bounced back with promotion from the Football Conference at the first time of asking.
The Football League Trophy has been a source of silverware for Carlisle over the years; they've reached multiple finals since doing so for the first time in 1995 and lifted the trophy on more than one occasion.
