Although Canada's first official game came in 1924, the team had unofficially been playing for over 30 years including a famous 1-0 defeat of their closest rivals, the United States, in 1885. While the Maple Leafs have won the CONCACAF Championship/Gold Cup in 1985 and 2000, perhaps the biggest highlight in their history came in 1986 with their first appearance at the FIFA World Cup, albeit they exited the tournament without scoring a goal. Their long wait to qualify for a second time finally came to an end in 2022, and they also feature in 2026 having automatically qualified as co-hosts.
