Cambridge United are a professional football team based in Cambridge, England. Their home ground is Abbey Stadium.
📜 Cambridge United History
The club was founded in 1912 as Abbey United, named after the city's Abbey district; it was not until 1951 that they adopted the Cambridge name, shortly after turning professional. Another team by the name of Cambridge United had been founded in 1909, but there is no link between the 2 clubs.
It was in 1970 that the club first entered the Football League, and within 8 seasons they had climbed to the Second Division.
A difficult period followed as the club suffered successive relegations in the mid 1980s, including setting an unwanted record in the 1983-84 campaign of 31 consecutive winless matches. A bounce back in the early 1990s saw them return to the second tier, where they narrowly missed out on becoming a founding member of the Premier League when they finished 5th in 1992.
Cambridge dropped out of the Football League entirely in 2005, eventually returning in 2014 after 9 years out.
