The Mustangs are the football team of California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. They compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of the NCAA and play in the Big Sky Conference.
Cal Poly was originally a vocational school, and fielded its first football team in 1915. Almost 2 decades later, the Mustangs enjoyed an incredible 1933 season, going undefeated without conceding a single point. In 1941, the school became a 4 year college.
From 1946 to 1981, Cal Poly competed in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, winning 12 conference titles in that period. In 1982, the Mustangs moved to the Western Football Conference, where they won 2 titles in the span of 10 years.
After short spells in the American West Conference and as an independent school, Cal Poly joined the Great West Conference in 2004 and remained a member until 2011. Ahead of the 2012 season, the Mustangs moved to the Big Sky Conference.
