The Cougars are the football team of Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA and play as an Independent. Starting in the 2023-24 season, they will play in the Big 12 Conference.
BYU claims 1 national title from 1984 and 23 conference titles. The Cougars maintain a longstanding rivalry with the Utah Utes, and when the teams face each other the game is known as the "Holy War." BYU also play a regular rivalry game against the Utah State Aggies, "The Battle for the Old Wagon Wheel."
One Cougar has won the Heisman Trophy – Ty Detmer, in 1990 – but 7 others have been finalists for the prestigious award.
The Head Coach at BYU is Kalani Sitake, who started at fullback for the Cougars from 1998-2000 while he was a student at the university.
