Visiting Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is samba-dancing, caipirinha-drinking, football-mad city built on the tropical hills of the Tijuca Forest on Brazil’s southeast coast. The city is most well-known for the Rio Carnival, an exuberant street festival held in February each year in a camp and colourful display of feather-adorned samba dancers and floats. However, its vibrant, excitable, and spirited atmosphere is not exclusive to this event – people of all ages and backgrounds come together weekly to drink, dance and socialise in the streets of Lapa and Pedra do Sal. Surrounded by mountains on one side, and beaches on the other, Rio offers an idyllic balance of city and nature. The long stretch of sand across Copacabana and Ipanema offer the perfect antidote to a night on the town. The Corcovado Mountain, meanwhile, upon which the city’s famous Christ the Redeemer statue stands, offers breathtaking views of it all.
