International tennis tournaments have been held at Tennis Club Weissenhof since the early 20th century, a sporting legacy which the Boss Open is a crucial part of, having first been held in 1916. Traditionally known as the Stuttgart Open, and formerly known as the MercedesCup for sponsorship reasons, the tournament was previously held on clay, only switching to grass in 2015. Today it is an ATP 250 tournament, having historically been a part of the Men's Grand Prix Series.
As well as awarding a trophy, prize money, and ranking points to the tournament winner, the Boss Open was also known for giving the champion a brand-new Mercedes-Benz! Recipients of this unique prize over the years include Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Marin Čilić, and Taylor Fritz.
