The Berlin Tennis Open, also known as the German Open, is an annual women's tennis tournament and part of the WTA 500 tour. Founded in Hamburg in 1896, it is one of the world's oldest women's tennis tournaments. In 1979, the tournament moved to Berlin and ran until 2008, when it was discontinued. The event was reborn in 2020 as the Bett1open, but the Coronavirus pandemic put a temporary hold on proceedings, and so the first edition of the rebooted tournament successfully took place in 2021, at the Rot-Weiss Tennis Club in Berlin.
Former winners of the Berlin Tennis Open include Billie Jean King, Sue Barker, and Chris Evert, however it is Steffi Graf who is most closely tied to the tournament's heritage: the German great won the event a record 9 times, and in 2004 Center Court at the Rot-Weiss Tennis Club was renamed in her honour.
