Sport Lisboa e Benfica, more commonly known as simply Benfica, are a Portuguese football club playing in the Primeira Liga. Benfica were founded in 1904 and they form Portugal's "Big Three" clubs with Sporting CP and FC Porto; not only do these 3 typically contest the top spots in the Primeira Liga each year, they have also never been relegated from it. Benfica are also one of Europe's most successful clubs, having won an incredible number of domestic league titles, Taca de Portugal titles, and a host of other honours. The club also won back-to-back European Cups in 1961 and 1962 under coach Béla Guttmann; upon his departure after being denied a pay rise after the 2nd of those victories, the Hungarian is said to have put a "curse" on the club, supposedly declaring "Not in a hundred years from now will Benfica ever be European champions again." Benfica have subsequently reached 5 more European Cup finals between 1963 and 1990, plus 2 UEFA Europa League finals in 2013 and 2014, but their search for another European trophy continues. None other than Eusebio is the club's record goalscorer, with an astonishing 473 goals in 440 appearances.
