Belle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band from Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. Formed in the mid-1990s around songwriter Stuart Murdoch, they developed a distinctive blend of indie pop, twee pop, indie rock and chamber pop, marked by literate lyrics and gentle, melodic arrangements.
The band gained early acclaim with the albums "Tigermilk" and "If You’re Feeling Sinister", whose understated production and storytelling won a devoted following and frequent placement in best-of-the-decade lists. They expanded their sound on later releases such as "The Boy with the Arab Strap", "Dear Catastrophe Waitress", "The Life Pursuit" and "Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance".
Belle and Sebastian have earned significant recognition, including a BRIT Award for Best Newcomer and an NME Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Key songs such as "The State I Am In", "The Boy with the Arab Strap", "I’m a Cuckoo" and "Piazza, New York Catcher" have cemented their status as influential figures in British indie music, while more recent albums "A Bit of Previous" and "Late Developers" show their continued evolution.
