Rugby league was played in Australia as early as the mid-1800s, but it wasn't until the turn of the century that club and state teams starting contributing groups of players to united regional or national teams. By 1908, there was a bona fide national side, the Kangaroos, a team that Australia's many fervorous rugby league fans could be proud of.
