Adelaide Entertainment Centre (also known simply as the AEC) is a multi-purpose indoor sports and entertainment arena located in Adelaide, Australia. It is often used by both the Adelaide 36ers basketball team and the Adelaide Thunderbirds netball team.
📜 History
The AEC opened in 1991. The Government of South Australia sought to build a larger, more modern entertainment venue in the area to replace the Apollo Stadium, which had a capacity of just 3,500.
As a result of the increased capacity, the AEC has been able to attract international music artists such as Kylie Minogue, Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift, and Dua Lipa over the years.
An AUD $52 million renovation, which included the construction of a new entry, theatre, and upgrade of the existing facilities, was completed in 2010. The new domed entryway, known as the Orb, contains a dynamic LED lighting system that gives the venue a striking appearance.
The 36ers moved to the venue from Titanium Security Arena in 2019, while the Thunderbirds – who more often utilise the Netball SA Stadium – have used it more sporadically, first doing so for the 2010 and 2013 ANZ Championship grand finals.
