Since September, 32 teams have been competing for a chance to play in the NFL’s decisive game – the world-famous Super Bowl. After months of regular season games and several weeks of playoffs, that field has been narrowed down to 2.
On Sunday 12 February 2023, State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona will host the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
So how did they get there?
Kansas City Chiefs
After falling to the Cincinnati Bengals in last year’s AFC Championship, Kansas City came back strong in 2022. The Chiefs finished the regular season 14–3, registering their only defeats against the Indianapolis Colts, the Buffalo Bills, and the Bengals.
It wasn’t always smooth sailing. The Chiefs needed overtime to beat the Tennessee Titans and the Houston Texans, and several of the season’s wins were by razor-thin margins – just 1 point decided the Week 5 contest with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Chiefs won when it mattered, though, with QB Patrick Mahomes demonstrating his elite skills and tenacity to keep the team in the race for the Super Bowl. Kansas City enjoyed a bye through the first week of the playoffs, before knocking out the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Divisional Round. In the AFC Championship, Mahomes and his team avenged the previous season’s loss and beat the Bengals 23–20 to book their tickets to Arizona. The Chiefs have now qualified for the Super Bowl in 3 of the last 4 seasons.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Birds soared through the first half of the regular season, recording an 8–0 record for the first time in the history of the franchise. This incredible streak was ended by an upset loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 10 – a defeat made even more surprising by the fact that Philadelphia had won the same matchup with a score of 24–8 in the third week of play.
The Eagles rebounded with another 5 straight wins, taking their record to 14–1. Despite losses to the Cowboys and Saints in the final 3 games of the regular season, the Birds clinched top spot in the NFC East and a bye through the first round of playoffs.
Returning to form at the right time, the Eagles flew through the Divisional Round with a 38–7 win over the New York Giants. The NFC Championship was only slightly closer, as Philadelphia crushed the San Francisco 49ers 31–7 to secure their fourth ever Super Bowl berth.
If you want to join the Chiefs and the Eagles at State Farm Stadium on Sunday, tickets are available from USD $5,575.
