Once the Christmas holidays have finished and you’ve seen in the new year, January can sometimes feel like a dull, uneventful month. Thankfully, January in Australia will be anything but boring, with a great range of tennis events ready to keep you entertained before the Australian Open gets underway. In 2022, Sydney will be at the heart of the country’s calendar-opening cornucopia of tournaments, as it plays host to both the ATP Cup and the Sydney Tennis Classic!

The ATP Cup, which will take place between 1-9 January, is a team tournament, comprised this time around of a field of 16. Unlike the Davis Cup, the other major men’s tennis team tournament, the ATP Cup does not rely on a campaign of global qualifying rounds to determine its entrants; instead, each country qualifies for the ATP Cup based on the ranking of its best singles player. The 2022 ATP Cup will be jointly hosted by 2 Sydney venues, the Ken Rosewall Arena, and the Qudos Bank Arena, which are situated a stone’s throw apart, within the iconic Sydney Olympic Park. The teams will be divided into 4 groups of 4, and fight it out across round robin matches and a knock-out stage, in an effort to be crowned ATP Cup champions!
Tickets for the ATP Cup are available to purchase on a sessional basis, with each ticket providing a reserved seat in either the Ken Rosewall Arena or Qudos Bank Arena, for that entire session. Adult tickets start from AUD $39 (£21.07) in the Ken Rosewall Arena’s Courtside, Lower Tier, and Upper Tier seating areas, and there are plenty of discounts available too, including child, student, senior, and military veteran concessions. At Ken Rosewall Arena there are also discounted family tickets available on select days, offering reduced rates for groups of 2 adults and 2 children!

The Ken Rosewall Arena is also hosting the Sydney Tennis Classic, a one-off WTA 500 and ATP 250 tennis tournament, set to take place from 9-15 January. With some of the world’s best female and male players set to descend on Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre’s main show court, this is a fantastic chance to see some genuine stars in a unique context. Many competitors will be gearing-up for the Australian Open, which begins only 2 days after the Classic finishes, so the quality of tennis will be very high!
Like at the ATP Cup, seats at the Sydney Tennis Classic are sold on a sessional basis, and once again adult prices begin from AUD $39 (£21.07) in the Courtside, Lower Tier, and Upper Tier seating areas. A similar range of discounts is also on offer, and family group tickets are available to buy during the tournament’s final 3 days, allowing families of 4 to catch the biggest matches from as little as AUD $97 (£52.40) in the Upper Tier - that’s the equivalent of just AUD $24.25 (£13.10) each!
As well as the events happening in Sydney in the new year, be sure to check out the Adelaide International (2-15 January), and the Melbourne Summer Set (3-9 January), which are both also taking place in the run-up to the Australian Open. Add these events to your Koobit interests to be notified about ticket sales, and be sure to check out the “Happy Slam” itself, with tickets already available!
