In April 2020, AELTC announced the cancellation of Wimbledon 2020, which was due to take place from 29 June 2020. It was decided that the uncertainty around the Coronavirus pandemic made it impossible to postpone the uniquely summer event to later in the year and so there would be no tournament at all in 2020. Prior to this, the championship had only been cancelled as a result of World War.
The 134th Championship will now take place from 28 June to 11 July 2021. The organisers have also confirmed that all fans who purchased tickets for the 2020 event will have the option for their tickets to be transferred to 2021 for the same day and court. Therefore, with the 2020 Public Ballot already at capacity, AELTC have advised that there will be no new Public Ballot for 2021.
Whilst understandable, the news will be disappointing for fans without tickets hoping to attend in 2021. However, it is possible that a significant proportion of 2020 ticket holders may not be in a position to attend in 2021, and AELTC have added a caveat that their planning will include the possibility of additional tickets becoming available. So, whilst there may not be a ballot, don’t give up hope just yet.
It is also worth noting that Wimbledon always holds back an allocation of tickets for on-the-day purchases, so even if you cannot get hold of an advance ticket, you can still get up early and join “The Queue” 👫👬🧑🤝🧑👫👭👯👫🧑🤝🧑💃🕺 … which is literally the world’s most organised queue – England at its finest.
In addition to the announcement on the 2021 Public Ballot, AELTC confirmed that they have donated £1.2 million to Coronavirus charitable causes, and will be distributing £10 million from the prize money across all players who would have attended the championship, and additionally compensating officials who would have worked there. A big thumbs up for an incredibly positive example in difficult times.
