With Australia’s Cameron Smith lifting the Claret Jug and cementing his place in golfing history as the winner of the 150th edition of The Open Championship, the 4th and final major on the men’s golfing calendar has now concluded. Of those in 2022, 3 of them produced 1st-time winners in Scottie Scheffler (The Masters), Matt Fitzpatrick (US Open), and Smith, although the latter had already been enjoying an excellent year after winning the unofficial “5th major” that is the Players Championship back in March.
The only previous major-winner to add to their collection this year was Justin Thomas, who claimed the Wanamaker Trophy for the 2nd time at Southern Hills Country Club in May, 5 years on from doing so at Quail Hollow Club. A dramatic finish saw Thomas edge out Will Zalatoris in a 3-hole playoff after leader Mito Pereira collapsed on the final hole with a double bogey.
Next year, Thomas will be hoping to defend his title at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. Renowned as one of the United States’ top golf courses, Oak Hill has hosted the PGA Championship and the US Open 3 times apiece already, as well as several senior editions of those competitions. It was also the site of the 1995 Ryder Cup, won by Europe after a dramatic comeback.
Following a ballot, tickets are now on general sale for the 2023 PGA Championship. The only spectator tickets available next year are Championship+ passes. These are no ordinary general admission tickets however; as well as grounds access to the tournament, they are inclusive of food and non-alcoholic beverages, so you’ll have no shortage of snacks to enjoy as you watch the best in the world in action. Each ticket entitles the holder to 2 free entrees, 2 free snacks, and 2 free drinks whenever they visit a concession venue on the course, and here’s the best part – you can return to the venues as many times as you want! Prices start from USD $67, and children aged 17 and under are free to enter.
Official travel packages are also available, which include 2, 3, or 4 nights’ stay at DoubleTree by Hilton Rochester hotel, Championship+ tickets for 2, 3, or 4 days during the tournament, and round-trip transport between the hotel and the event each day. Packages are available for 1-4 people, with prices starting at $1,465 per person as part of a 4-person package.
