It’s fair to say Hollywood has come to the small Welsh city of Wrexham since Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney purchased the club in 2020. The 3rd-oldest professional football club in the world have been on quite the journey since then, as detailed in the Welcome to Wrexham documentary series. After losing to Grimsby Town in the National League play-off semi-final last year, Wrexham are on the verge of regaining their Football League status this season as they sit top of the table with 3 matches remaining.
Whether they succeed or not, they’ll be heading for the sunny climes of California this summer, although they won’t quite be making it to Hollywood. They will instead be heading to San Diego, where they will face Premier League giants Manchester United in a pre-season friendly – their first appearance in the United States, and United’s first visit to San Diego.
"The tour will be an excellent opportunity for us to prepare for the 2023-24 season, and the match against Manchester United will be a competitive fixture and a good test for us as we look ahead to the new campaign,” said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson. "We enjoy welcoming supporters from the US to the Racecourse Ground, and we're looking forward to being able to play in front of some of these new fans on American soil in the summer."
The Red Devils have made progress toward returning to their best this season under manager Erik ten Hag; they’ve already lifted the Carabao Cup this season, and they could still add further silverware in the FA Cup and UEFA Europa League.
It is quite some time since these 2 historic sides met; it was all the way back in 1995, with Manchester United coming out on top 5-2 in a thrilling FA Cup tie. While this match won’t quite have the same intensity, it nevertheless promises to be an enjoyable outing for fans of both sides in the United States and those travelling from the United Kingdom.
Tickets start at $112, and Snapdragon Stadium has numerous premium seating areas that include club or lounge access for those seeking an upgraded matchday experience. To learn more about this Manchester United v Wrexham fixture and the tickets, click here.
