Almost half a year has passed since the Kansas City Chiefs capped off the 2023/24 NFL season with their second-straight Super Bowl win. For many football fans, the offseason has already dragged on too long, but the wait is nearly over – competitive NFL action is right around the corner.
On Friday 2 August, the annual Hall of Fame game kicked off the 2024 NFL preseason as the Chicago Bears defeated the Houston Texans 21–17. While the game helped both teams with their preparations for the season ahead, it also reminded fans that the regular season, which is set to begin on Thursday 5 September, is less than 4 weeks away.

All that lies between today and NFL's opening weekend is the preseason: a slate of exhibition fixtures in which teams will fine-tune their plans for the year ahead. Each NFL team will play 3 preseason games in 2024, and while they may not be as competitive as regular season clashes, there's plenty for fans to enjoy.
Preseason games are the cheapest way to experience the NFL, providing fans with the chance to enjoy an afternoon or evening in their favourite team's stadium for a fraction of the regular price. These games will also feature, even if in a limited capacity, some of the league's top stars, so you may well see the likes of Patrick Mahomes or Tyreek Hill take to the field for a few downs. Perhaps most intriguing of all is the fact that NFL rookies will take some of their very first snaps in the preseason, while veterans and less heralded team members fight for a place on the roster. In short, there is much at stake in every quarter. The road to a championship starts now!
