Despite coming home without a gold, Biles showed the world how to perform like a champion. After suffering from a bout of the “twisties” - where a gymnast loses brain and body connection and muscle memory fails potentially leading to injury from a mistimed or misplaced move - Biles chose to remove herself from competition putting her own mental and physical health first. Returning for the balance beam final, she overcame the weight of expectation to win a bronze medal.
Biles’ quote about her upcoming Gold Over America Tour fits perfectly with her strength during the immense pressure of the past few months: “I love the sport of gymnastics and wanted to help create a show that celebrates the pure joy of performing. I believe there is gold inside of us all and it’s time to let that gold shine”.
