The Red Wolves are the football team of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the NCAA and play in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference.
Arkansas State claims 1 national Football Championship Subdivision title and 11 conference titles, the most recent coming in 2016 when they shared the Sun Belt championship with Appalachian State.
The Red Wolves have been part of the FBS since 1992, and joined the Sun Belt Conference as an inaugural member in 2001. This was the beginning of a strong period for Arkansas State, who had struggled to find form and consistent wins since moving into the FBS. Since 2020, the team has been coached by Butch Jones, who came to Jonesboro from Alabama where he worked as special assistant to Nick Saban.
The Red Wolves' main rival is Memphis, and the teams have played each other 58 times in their history. The rivalry game is known as the Paint Bucket Bowl, and Memphis leads the series with 32 wins to Arkansas State's 22.
