Deportivo Alavés, S.A.D. - more commonly known simply as Alavés - is a Spanish professional football club based in Vitoria-Gasteiz in northern Spain and currently playing in the country's top tier La Liga. The club plays home games at Mendizorrotza Stadium.
Formed in 1920 when the club was originally known as Sport Friends, the name was changed to the one known today just a year later, and in 1930, Alavés became the first club to be promoted from the Segunda División to the top tier. Recognised as the third most successful team in the Basque Country after Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad, the club has had mixed success throughout its history having played across the divisions. They were runners-up in the 2016/17 Copa del Rey and in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup and recently gained promotion back to La Liga in 2023.
