The Hornets are the football team of Alabama State University in Montgomery. They compete in the Football Championship Subdivision of the NCAA and play in the East Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
Alabama State play their games at Hornet Stadium, which has a capacity of 26,500. The Hornets claim 6 conference titles, including the 2004 SWAC Championship, which they won by defeating the Southern Jaguars in the final game.
More than 20 Hornets have gone on to play in the NFL, including Eddie Robinson, Tarvaris Jackson, Michael Coe, and Tytus Howard. In 2019, offensive guard Howard became the first ever Alabama State player to be picked in the first round of the NFL draft when he was chosen by the Houston Texans as the 23rd overall pick.
Eddie Robinson, who played linebacker for Alabama State and was drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1992, has been the head coach of the Hornets since 2022.
