Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax - also known as AFC Ajax, Ajax Amsterdam, or more commonly just Ajax and named after the Greek legend - is a professional football club based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and plays in the top level of Dutch football, the Eredivisie. The team plays its home games at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
The club was founded in 1900 and gained promotion to the highest tier in 1911. Having since continuously played in the country's top league, Ajax is one of the Dutch "big 3" along with rivals Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven. As well as being the most successful club in the Netherlands, Ajax has also won numerous cups and titles including the Champions League, the Intercontinental Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and many more. The club has been known throughout its history for its scouting, development, and youth system, producing some of the finest players in the world.
